Received your letter of the 15th today. Was very glad to hear from you. Thought perhaps one of those service men you meet over at Coney Island had kidnapped you or something. I guess you are pretty busy working though. Most everyone is these days. Well, I'm pretty happy today. The "old man" told me yesterday that I could have my furlough the 2nd of October. SO 2 weeks from today I should be at home. Boy, am I going to have time! Have been looking forward to it for a long time. Now that I can go I'm afraid that something will turn up that will prevent me from going. Haven't done anything much lately, and nothing has happened so I don't know what to write.
I'm on C.Q. (Charge of Quarters) today, si I have quite a bit of time. I'm frequently interrupted, telephones and stuff, so if I make some mistakes you'll know the reason why. Our prisoners are behaving very well, so there ins't anything to tell there. They seems to be pretty well contented. I can't blame them either. They don't have to work, get the best of food, a good place to sleep, etc. Sometimes I think I'm on the wrong side of the fence. We're having a bit of a dust storm here today. I sure will be gald to get back to good old Ohio, and get away from some of this dust. We keep all the doors and windows closed, but you can't keep it out. I'd heard a lot about these storms, but I'd never expect to see one, They sure are awful.
Well, that's all I know. It's not much, I know. In fact I never know anything. This is a heck of a place to learn anything, so I guess I'll remain ignorant for the duration. Or at least as long as I'm here. Will close for now. More later. Tell your folks I said "Hello", and write when you can.
Your Cousin, Joe
